The recording of parliamentary debates began in 1803, but it was not strictly verbatim until 1909. Earlier Debates from 1066 are contained in William Cobbett's The Parliamentary history of England which was derived from various sources, including contemporary personal diaries. For information about our holdings of these sources go to the Debates (official and unofficial, except Hansard) section.
The term Hansard is commonly used to refer to reports of debates in parliament, both in Britain and in Australia. The name derives from Thomas Curson Hansard, son of Luke Hansard, printer to the House of Commons, who continued Cobbett's Parliamentary debates from 1811.
