Reference works

We have an excellent collection of books on literary theory in the Barr Smith Library: find them by searching the Catalogue under the Subject Heading Literature--History and criticism--Theory, etc..

You'll find a good range of guides to critical theory in the Barr Smith Library Reference collection at call number 801.95. The most useful titles, that I use regularly are:

The Johns Hopkins guide to literary theory and criticism
This is the second edition, issued in 2005, edited by Michael Groden, Martin Kreiswirth, and Imre Szeman, and with nearly one thousand pages of text. All articles are signed and most have a list of references for further exploration of the topic under discussion.

The Routledge companion to critical theory
Edited by Simon Malpas and Paul Wake, this book defines what is generically referred to as 'critical theory' and guides readers through some of the most complex and fundamental concepts in the field, ranging from Historicism to Postmodernism, from Psychoanalytic Criticism to Race and Postcoloniality. Fully cross referenced, it comprises introductions to important ideas followed by a dictionary of terms and thinkers. Further reading is offered to guide you to crucial primary essays and introductory chapters on each concept.

The Cambridge history of literary criticism
An excellent series of volumes being published by Cambridge University Press. They are great for background reading on any particular critic, school or movement. You will find this title in the Barr Smith Library's Main collection at call number 801.95 K35c.
Each volume covers one period of literary criticism; so far, the following volumes have appeared: vol. 1. Classical criticism; vol. 3. The Renaissance; vol. 4. Eighteenth century; vol. 5. Romanticism; vol. 7. Modernism and the New Criticism; vol. 8. From formalism to poststructuralism; vol. 9. Twentieth-Century historical, philosophical and psychological perspectives.
We have a standing order to this series.

This title is in the Main collection at Call Number 801.95 K35c.
