Library services for University of Adelaide Alumni

A person who is registered with the Development and Alumni Office of the University of Adelaide may join the Library for an annual fee.

Joining the Library entitles registered alumni members to book borrowing privileges and other services.

Costs
Payment of $55 entitles you to book borrowing privileges for twelve months.
Alumni members who wish also to borrow bound volumes of journals must pay a further fee of $22
All fees include GST.

How do I apply?
You should ask in person for a Registration form during office hours (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm) from:
  • Services desk, Barr Smith Library Level 3 South
  • Loans desk, Waite Library
  • Loans desk, Roseworthy Campus Library

You will be asked to provide photo ID.

Alumni members who join the Library will be issued with a Library Card. You will need to bring this Card with you when you use the Library.
If you lose your Library Card, report the loss immediately to the Services desk (telephone number 8303 5124). Any loans made with it before it is reported lost will be your responsibility.
Lost Library Cards may be replaced at a cost of $11.00 [includes GST].

Click on the MyLibrary option in the Library Catalogue to find out about your loans, Requests and demerit points.

Borrowing books

What may I borrow ?
As an Alumni borrower you may have on loan up to ten items at a time from the Main collection of the Barr Smith Library or from a branch library.
You may not borrow course work books; this includes all short loan and multiple copy books, and all items in the Reserve and Multimedia collections.
Alumni members who pay the additional $22 [includes GST] fee may also borrow bound volumes of journals from the Barr Smith Library only.

Loan periods
Books from the Main collection may be borrowed for four weeks. Bound volumes of BSL journals may be borrowed for 24 hours by Alumni members who have paid the additional fee.
An item on loan to you may be recalled if it is urgently required.

Borrowing times
You may borrow until five minutes before the Library closes.

How to borrow
Take the book you want to borrow and your Library Card to the Loans desk, or use a Self-service loans machine in the Barr Smith Library. A receipt will be issued recording details of the item borrowed and the date on which it is due for return.
You must return the book or renew the loan, on or before the due date.

Handling charge
If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.

Renewals
You may renew the loan of a book from the MyLibrary option on any public access PC in the Library or remotely from home or work.
You may also renew a loan in person at a Loans Desk on or before the due date - or by telephone (telephone number is 8303 5759).

A loan may be renewed up to four times.

A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.

Recalls
If you have already renewed the loan period of an item which is subsequently requested by another user, or if the book is required for the Reserve collection, we will ask you to return it immediately.

Returning books
Books on loan must be returned to the Barr Smith Library or to any branch library so that the loan can be correctly discharged.

Demerit points
Demerit points are applied when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day).

If you acccumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for fifteen days. You can check how many demerit points you have accumulated from the MyLibrary option on the Library Catalogue.

For more details, please go to the separate demerit points page.

Please speak to a staff member in the Barr Smith Library (tel: 8303 5124) or at any branch library, or email library@adelaide.edu.au if you have a query about demerit points.

Requests
If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request' it. This means that it will be kept for you at the Loans desk when it is returned, and we'll let you know that it is available.
To Request a book, call up its catalogue entry on the Library Catalogue. Click on Requests and follow the instructions on the screen. Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.
