Borrowing from the Library by institutional members
- Who may borrow?
- The University of Adelaide Library offers membership to local libraries and organisations for an annual fee. Eligible institutions include commercial institutions, State, Commonwealth and Local Government departments and instrumentalities, recognised post-secondary education institutions, and certain non-profit organisations.
- Library Card
- Institutional members are issued with a Library Card. You will need to bring this Card with you when you use the Library.
If you lose your Library Card, report the loss immediately to the Services desk (telephone number 8303 5124). Any loans made with it before it is reported lost will be your responsibility.
Lost Library Cards may be replaced at a cost of $11.00 [includes GST].
- What may be borrowed?
- Institutional members may have on loan up to 20 items at a time from the Main collection of the Barr Smith Library.
You may not borrow books identified as being required for course work; this includes all short loan and multiple copy books, and all items in the Reserve collection.
Special conditions apply at the Elder Music, Law, Waite and Roseworthy Campus Libraries; please ask at the branch libraries for full details.
- Services
- A range of electronic databases and Internet resources is provided through the public access terminals behind the Barr Smith Library Information desk. Remote access to electronic resources is not possible.
- Restrictions
- As well as course work items, there are other categories of material that may not be borrowed. They include material from the Reference collection, the bound and unbound journals, newspapers, items from the audiovisual collection, and microforms.
Institutional members may not use the Student computers service.
- Borrowing times
- You may borrow until five minutes before the Library closes.
- How to borrow
- Hand the item you want to borrow, with your Library Card, to an assistant at the Loans desk or use the Self-service loans machine. The loan will be recorded on the Library's computer loan system. Because the system requires the barcode on your Library Card to correctly record the loan, you can't borrow books without it. A receipt will be issued recording details of the item borrowed and the date on which it is due for return. You must return the book, or renew the loan, on or before the due date.
- Renewing a loan
- You may renew the loan of a book from the MyLibrary option on any public access Library computer, or remotely from any computer that is connected to the University of Adelaide network.
You may also renew a loan in person - take the item to the Loans desk on or before the due date - or by telephone (telephone number is 8303 5759) - quote the barcode number from your Library Card and the title of the book.
A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.
- Loan period
- Books may be borrowed for four weeks. You may renew a loan up to four times, for a further four weeks each time, so long as nobody is waiting for the book.
An item on loan to you may be recalled if it is urgently required.
- Requests
- If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request' it. This means that it will be kept for you at the Loans desk when it is returned, and we'll let you know that it is available.
To Request a book, call up its record on the Library Catalogue. Click on Requests and follow the instructions on the screen.
Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.
- Returning books
- Books on loan must be returned through the chutes at the Library entrance (or at the Exit desk) so that the loan can be correctly discharged.
- Demerit points
- Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date, at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day).
If you acccumulate two hundred demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for fifteen days. You can check how many demerit points you have accumulated by using the MyLibrary option on the Library Catalogue.
For more details, please go to the separate demerit points page.
Please talk to a staff member at the Services desk, immediately to the left of the Loans desk, (telephone 8303 5124) if you have a question about demerit points.
- How much does it cost?
- There is a graduated scale of charges based on the expected borrowing rate. If the borrowing limit for the nominated category is exceeded, an adjustment will be made to the membership fee and an invoice will be sent to the institution in the following year.
| Category | Annual fee | Borrowing limit |
| A | $110.00 | Up to 25 loans per annum |
| B | $220.00 | Up to 50 loans per annum |
| C | $330.00 | Up to 100 loans per annum |
| D | $440.00 | Up to 250 loans per annum |
| | All fees include GST | |
Please note: you are responsible for all items you borrow; you will have to pay for the cost of replacement, plus a non-refundable handling fee of $30.00, of items that are lost or damaged while they are on loan to you.
