Borrowing from the Library by staff members
- Library card
- Contracted staff members of the University of Adelaide may obtain a Staff ID Card from the University Card Centre, located in the Student Centre. Your ID Card has a Library barcode on it so that it can be used as a Library Card.
Non-contract University staff may obtain a Library Card from the Library's Services desk on production of a signed Authorisation for Library Privileges form from their Department. This form may be obtained from the Services desk on the North Terrace Campus or from the Loans desk at the Roseworthy Campus and Waite Libraries. If you lose your Library Card, please report the loss immediately to the University Card Centre (telephone 8303 3363) or to the Library's Services desk (telephone 8303 5124) -- you are responsible for all loans made with it. A Library Card may be used only by the person to whom it was issued.
- MyLibrary
- All University of Adelaide staff members have an account, called MyLibrary, on the Library's computer system. Click on the
MyLibrary button on the Library Catalogue or from the Library Home page, to find out about your loans, Requests and demerit points. There's a MyLibrary help page if you would like to know more.
- How to borrow
- Hand the book and your ID Card or Library Card, to an assistant at the Loans desk or use the Self-service loans machine. The loan will be recorded on the Library's computer loan system.
The system requires the barcode on your ID Card to correctly record the loan, and so you can't borrow without it. A receipt will be issued recording details of the item borrowed and the date on which it is due for return. You must return the item, or renew the loan, on or before the due date.
- What and How many
- You may borrow books and bound volumes of journals from the Main collection and items from the Reserve collection.
You may have on loan up to fifty items at one time. You may also use your ID Card or Library Card at the Law Library, the Elder Music Library, the Roseworthy Campus Library and the Waite Library -- ask the Librarian at these libraries for details of any special conditions that may apply.
- Borrowing times
-
- You may borrow until five minutes before the Library closes.
A maximum of two Reserve collection items may be borrowed for overnight loan after 4.00pm. They must be returned by opening time on the next day the Library is open.
- Returning books
- Books on loan must be returned through the chutes at the Library entrance (or at the Exit desk) so that the loan can be correctly discharged.
Books borrowed from the Reserve collection must be returned directly to the Reserve and Multimedia desk -- when the Library is closed return them through the chute at the entrance labelled After hours Reserve items. The chutes at the Library entrance are permanently open for the return of items from loan.
- Loan periods
- The Library varies conditions of loan to meet the needs of particular groups of users, and to maximise the availability of resources. The following loan conditions apply to members of the academic staff:
| Item | Loan period | Renewals |
|---|
| Main collection book |
10 weeks * | Four | | Short loan (Multiple copy) book | 7 days | One | | Reserve collection item | 3 hours/overnight | One | | Journal (bound volumes only) | 24 hours | One |
*Loan periods of longer than two weeks are made on the basis that we will recall the item after the normal two-week period if it is requested by another user.
The University Librarian may permit a long loan of 52 weeks for items which have been purchased from research funds and which are required for personal research. Application for 52 week loan forms are available at the Loans desk.
Note: Loan periods and conditions may differ at the branch libraries.
- Renewals
- You may renew the loan of a book using MyLibrary.
You may also renew a loan in person - take the item to the Loans desk on or before the due date - or by telephone (telephone number is 8303 5759) - quote the barcode number from your ID Card or Library Card and the title of the book.
A loan may not be renewed if another user is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.
- Recalls
- If you have already renewed the loan period of an item which is subsequently requested by another user, or if the book is required for the Reserve collection, we will ask you to return it immediately.
- Library notices
- All members of the University of Adelaide community have an email address on the University network to which Library notices will be sent.
If you have an alternative email account you will need to arrange for the forwarding of messages from your University email address to your other email address. The Library system has to use the official University e-mail database and has no means of changing individual addresses.
- Handling charge
- If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.
- Requests
- If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request' it. This means that it will be kept for you at the Loans desk when it is returned, and we'll let you know that it is available.
To Request a book, call up its record on the Library Catalogue. Click on Requests and follow the instructions on the screen. Full details are on a separate web page: How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.
- Demerit points
- Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day), except for items borrowed from the Reserve collection where demerit points accrue at the rate of four per hour (or part of an hour).
If you acccumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for fifteen days. You can check how many demerit points you have
accumulated by logging in to your account on MyLibrary. For
more details, please go to the separate demerit points page.
Please talk to a staff member at the Services desk, immediately to the left of the Loans desk, (telephone 8303 5124) if you have a question about demerit points.
If you are planning to be absent from the University, please check your loans account on MyLibrary and return or renew the loan periods of items that will fall due during your absence. It will help us if you arrange for your mail to be monitored while you are on leave so that Library notices asking for the return of items that are urgently needed by another user, or for the Reserve collection, may be attended to promptly.
