Borrowing from the Library by students

Contents:

Student Identity CardStudent Identity Card
When you enrol you will be issued with a Student Identity Card. The card has a Library barcode on it so it can be used as a Library Card.

If you lose your ID Card, please report the loss immediately to the University Card Centre (telephone 8303 3363), and to the Library -- you are responsible for all loans made with it.

An ID Card may be used only by the person to whom it was issued.

MyLibrary
All students who are enrolled at the University of Adelaide have a MyLibrary account on the Library's computer system. Click on the MyLibrary option in the Library Catalogue to find out about your loans, Requests and demerit points. There's a MyLibrary help page if you would like to know more.

How to borrow
Hand the book and your ID Card to an assistant at the Loans desk or use the Self-service loans machine. The loan will be recorded on the Library's computer loan system. The system requires the barcode on your ID Card to correctly record the loan, and so you can't borrow books without it. A receipt will be issued recording details of the book you have borrowed and the date on which it is due for return. You must return the book, or renew the loan, on or before the due date

What and how many
Undergraduate students may borrow books from the Main collection, the Reserve collection, and from the branch libraries, and may have on loan up to fifteen books at a time.
Advanced level students (honours, higher degree, Diploma, M.A. qualifying and students enrolled in 4th-6th year) may also borrow bound volumes of journals and may have on loan up to twenty items at a time.

Borrowing times
You may borrow until five minutes before the Library closes.
Reserve collection books may be borrowed on overnight loan after 4.00pm on weekdays and on Saturdays and Sundays.

Loan periods
The Library varies conditions of loan to meet the needs of particular groups of users, and to maximise the availability of resources.

Undergraduate students Loan period Renewals
Main collection books 14 days Four
Short loan (Multiple copy) books 7 days One
Reserve collection items 3 hours/overnight One

Advanced level students Loan period Renewals
Main collection books 4 weeks Four
Short loan (Multiple copy) books 7 days One
Reserve collection items 3 hours/overnight One
Bound volumes of journals 24 hours One

Note:-- Loan periods and conditions may differ at the branch libraries.

Renewals
You may renew the loan of a book from the MyLibrary option on any Library Catalogue terminal or remotely from any computer that is connected to the University of Adelaide network.
You may also renew a loan in person - take the item to the Loans desk on or before the due date. Loans may also be renewed by ringing the Loans desk (telephone number is 8303 5759) - you'll need to quote the barcode number from your Student ID Card and the title of the book.
A loan may not be renewed if someone is waiting for the book or if you have already renewed it for the maximum number of renewals allowed.

Recalls
If you have already renewed the loan period of a book which is subsequently requested by another user, or if the book is required for the Reserve collection, we will ask you to return it immediately.

Returning books
Books on loan must be returned through the chutes at the Library entrance (or at the Exit desk) so that the loan can be correctly discharged. Books borrowed from the Reserve collection must be returned directly to the Reserve and Multimedia desk -- when the Library is closed return them through the chute at the entrance labelled After hours Reserve items.

The chutes at the Library entrance are permanently open for the return of items.

Library notices
All members of the University of Adelaide community have an email address on the University network to which Library notices will be sent.
If you have an alternative email account you will need to arrange for the forwarding of messages from your University email address to your other email address.
The Library system has to use the official University e-mail database and has no means of changing individual addresses.

Handling charge
If an item is kept beyond the date of despatch of the first and final overdue notice requesting its return, an invoice will be sent for the cost of replacement of the item, plus a non-refundable handling charge of $30.00 per item.

Requests
If the book you want is out on loan you may 'Request' it. This means that it will be kept for you when it is returned, and we'll email you to let you know that it is available. The book will be held for you at the Loans desk for a week.
To Request a book, call up its record on the Library Catalogue. Click on Requests and follow the screen instructions. Full details are on a separate web page:
How to Request that a book on loan be held for you.

Demerit points
Fair sharing of materials is the basis on which the Library operates. Demerit points are allocated when items are not returned by the due date at a rate of two points per day (or part of a day), except for items borrowed from the Reserve collection where demerit points accrue at the rate of four per hour (or part of an hour).
If you acccumulate sixty demerit points your borrowing privileges are withdrawn for fifteen days. You can check how many demerit points you have accumulated from the MyLibrary option on the Library Catalogue.
For more details, please go to the separate
demerit points page.

Please talk to a staff member at the Services desk, immediately to the left of the Loans desk, (telephone 8303 5124) if you have a question about demerit points.

Full details of the borrowing rules are in section vi of the Library rules
